—The Dolphin on My Neck (Crayon)

Some music for you today stolen from Manitoba (who is now Caribou, I think), the original title was “Crayon.” The clasp of the titular necklace has broken since the genesis of this tributary hymn, and so the Dolphin, now in my drawer, awaits my finding a new method of attaching it to myself

The Dolphin on My Neck

My fingers smell like bleach
after they clean the plate
off of which I chose to eat

I do not fear the shadows
after the run of the sun’s
astral arc;
because the plastic dolphin
on my neck
glows proudly in the dark.
And I smile when I fuck you
cause I do what I’m told
just like I look both ways
when I cross the road
even one way lanes,
just for safety’s sake.

And the death face
takes shape when you
make claim to the
habits that unmake
your cigarettes
caffeinated carbonated
alcohol
amphetimated
every new intricacy
you wear intimately
lines on your face, friend,
times you’ve abated,
living on whim and fancy.

but you should never stop reaching
if your fingers still have feeling,
seek always to conquer with mercy.

Given one week’s dose
of a dead man’s medicated lotion
you go numb but you grow up
you succumb but you know what
it’s easier than trying to resist,
and you don’t want to piss off
the prescriptor, you better stick with it
he really insists

You had ginger ale and apples for breakfast,
for cheap,
and you’ve been wearing those jeans for a week,
 at least.
