One full year has passed since we
got drunk in the dark.
I was throwing up Sparks
We camped out in the Pines
and I broke my silence only
to insist, “I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.”
But I was clearly lying.
I was sick on the drinks
that we bought and could not finish.
And I was sick in the soul,
my heart was tired, spirit winded.
Last year,
I had a major crush on you.
This year, I’ve relaxed into
just thinking you’re pretty cute.
This summer saw us
leaving camp a little bit later
I went to the garden to gather
a handful mints leaves
for mixed drinks
and Gray stole blue agave
from the kitchen
All the ladies took their time
to gather fresh clothes and pillows
by the time we hit the road
the liquor stores were closed.
So we hit up a Kroger
went in to shop and play
we bought Blue Moon, ice cream, Mikes’
vegan snacks and a mini-bottle Barefoot Chardonay
And the kid with black and red face-paint,
panicked eyes, no older
than nineteen bought a 99 cent
orange soda.

At Elizabeth’s house
I put beer in my mouth
she’s got Magic Hat IPA
I like the way it tastes
and the way the hot tub bubbles
rush up, put my balls on the jets
we talk Quaker camp and friends
playing tug with her mutt and pug
four drinks deep we could go to bed
but we opt not to sleep
watch a cartoon instead.
Last year,
my heart was set on you.
This year, I just
think you’re pretty cool.
